I would like to make a fanlight above a bedroom door, to allow the passage of light from bedroom into the corridor leading to it. Traditionally I believe these are constructed together with the door lining, but as I the door is already built can anyone advise?

The wall above the door is plasterboard, and an electrician has confirmed there is no wiring to worry about. How does the following sound?

1. Cut square hole in plasterboard
2. Buy glass
3. Build 2 frames, one for each side of the room. Mitre joints on the corners, using a router rebate one frame to accept the glass.
4. Put it all together, using putty between glass and frame?

Any help much appreciated, I've built frames before but the picture variety! Thanks.

I tend to use the same sections as the door casing, i.e buy a couple of casing legs, and make the fanlight from this, then secure the glass with either 1/2" quadrant or glass bead with a clear silicone bedding.
