:( timing belt has jumped as a result of a jammed pulley. garage has quoted that valves are all damaged and it's a 16 valve engine. Car is escort finesse 'S' reg. Car is in very good nick considering the year. It's my sons car only had it a year and he is gutted. We are wanting the work to be done, cost around £700 including labour parts etc. Do you think this is a reasonable cost for the work to be done.
Many thanks for any advice

Sounds about right, I paid about £550 for a headgasket job on a golf16V year or 2 back so for a few new valves etc seems about right. Better prey thats all thats wrong. Get a few quotes if you want, find a Ford specialist. On the other hand there may be no damage at all. Impossible to say for sure till the heads off and stripped.

A friend had exactly the same thing happen on his 'S' reg Fiesta. I do not know as to whether this was a 16 valve engine (perhaps they are all 16v these days?), only that it was a 1.4. The problem was that the damage extended to the cylinder linings so he had to have an entire replacement engine. I think this cost around £800 including labour at his local garage. Ford had quoted around £2,000 for the same. Have heard that pulley breakage/jamming is a known problem on certain Ford engines. :( Good luck in getting it dealt with in anycase.

Might be worth enquiring further on here: http://www.feoc-uk.com/index.php?sh...y=Z-A&sort_key=last_post&topicfilter=all&st=0
