Joining cement board around plumbing

Hello,

Rather than cut a hole in the middle of my cement board to fit the plumbing, would I be able to join two pieces around the plumbing instead?

You can't really join cement fibreboard to itself, trying to screw too near the edges just results in the material cracking and breaking up - normally you do something like fix it to timber battens at corners
