I'm going to knock down an internal wall in my livingroom to open it up a bit and build a new porch as I will loose the old one when the wall comes down.

My question is ,who should i contact first with regards knocking down the wall and building the porch.Should it be the local building department or should i get a structural engineer in to check I can take down the wall.

Thanks in advance.

OK then whats the best place to find one.The Institution of Structural Engineers seems to be for more larger jobs.

never needed one  all i would suggest is google / yellow pages /council may have a list of "trusted engineers" is worth asking

I think I'll goto the council and see what they say. They might have a guy thats seen my type of house before and can tell me straight away.Does it take long to get planning permission as its only really needed for the porch which will only be about 3 or 4 sq metres anyway.

Being the council it'll take weeks.Unless I owe them money
