Unfortunatly the Jap Knot weed from the waste land behind our house has crept into our garden.

The section its growing in I have been levelling out for decking.

Am I right in thinking if I cover this area with a thick UV resistant membraine and then cover with stone that the lack of light will prevent this stuff from growing ........or is that wishfull thinking?

I think local councils have a responsibilty to remove / control this plant, have a word with them.

its wishful thinking. It is a very viralant form of weed. As diy says speak to the council and ask them. If its on their land they will havew a responsibilty to remove it. There are specialist companies that remove it. Its so bad its an offence to introduce it into the countryside

would be surprised if weed mat and stone will contain it as it will grow through tarmac/concrete/foundations, etc

all i can suggest is to repeat that council have to treat as it is a "notifiable weed" and this presumably is a private nuisance under law of tort if spreading to your garden?
Think the case was Rylands v Fletcher but memory failing me!

failing that try roundup about 2/3 times a year for 2/3 years and it should go

think it grows with tubers so don't try digging it up - you need to go about a metre or so deep and several across to remove the stuff!!
