Howdy.
I'd like to have my stairs striped back to bare wood with a clear varnish on top. Thing is, over the years, the various owners have really gone to town whacking goping great nails into stairs to gold carpets down. These have been subsequently hauled out when carpets have been changed, leaving stonking great broken out craters all over the treads.
I don't really want to use filler in these holes as I find it sticks out like a sore thumb in the wood. Is it possible to lay laminate/engineered wood flooring/birch ply over the treads and risers to cover everything? The fronts of the treads are bull nosed, so any covering will stick up by the thickness of the board before the curve.
Cheers.
