Hi all
a friend of mine has just laid a patio on top of his lawn without digging it up,he said its ok to do it like that as his soil is mainly clay underneath,he used the wacker plate directly on top of the grass then hardcore on top wacked down then laid the slabs on a gritsand mortar,to be honest its looks fab but is it advisable to do this on certain soil types as im thinking of doing the same.
thanks.

Must be a raised patio then? No reason not to if the ground is solid. Surprising though as most sites have been ripped up then top soiled when being built. That's why people revome to hard ground. Still if you can get away with it, well done. Before you do decide it might be worth digging a test hole or 2 on your own propesed site and see if its hard ground all the way down. If its a B**tard to dig out from spadefull No1 then its ok. If its easy going and then toughens up the deeper you go it would be worth digging out.

He left the grass there? When it decays that layer will drop. Might get away with it, given that he used a full mortar bed, but then again, he might not......

Strip off the turf, is my advice.
