levelling a kitchen floor ?? advice please

hi all ive just ripped up the floor tiles that were down in my kitchen/diner and im left with the stufft the tiles were put down on.

it looks like concrete substance thats been put down with a serrated edge trowel .

do i need to get this lot up or will leveliing compound do the trick ??

i want to get it level enough to put lino down.

i can take pictures if you want

any advice would be welcome!!
