If I need to lift the carpets for access and then put them back down, is there a way to do this without trashing them? They are hessian backed, with grippers around the edge of the room. I hope to avoid needing to take them up at all, but if I do I'd like to know what I'm in for!

Start in a corner and see if you can lift the carpet off the gripper. If it's tough, use some pliers on the pile to lift, and lift the carpet off the gripper. Depending how much you are uplifting you may need a knee kicker or a fitter to stretch the carpet back onto the gripper when you put the carpet back.
