In the bedroom today fitting new doors til 1930 (it was dark), but everytime we were banging away with the chisel and hammer the lights would flicker on and off???? Strange, any answer to this mysterious occurrence. One light actually went off completely.
Thanks again for any responses.

Sounds like you've got a loose connection somewhere, either at a ceiling rose, a switch, or a hidden junction box. Start off checking the terminals are tight on any of these you find, in the area where the hammering was taking place.

would that be upstairs switches etc... if memory serves me correctly...downstairs and upstairs are on seperate circuits

Sorry yes on the up staits lighting circuit, isolate that circuit at the cu/fuse box first, and test that fittings etc. are not live, and then check the terminals are tight.
