We have a 1929 house with a hall that looks like it is wood panelled. It is not. It is Lincrusta which now needs some attention.

Which is the best option? Should we restore the lincrusta (basically specialist wallpaper made to look like wood with some wood rods to make it look like panelling)? If so how?
Or should we give up and replace with real wood? The whole house still has lots of original features so we are keen to leave it with an original feel . The trend then was to have a dark hallway but we might lighten the effect if we can.
Any idea which is more preferable (lincrusta/wood) for a historic/house value point of view?

Lincrusta was a very popular wallcovering in older properties, and is often termed as the the inital reason why simple wallpapers were called wallcoverings.

You speak hear of a wood effect as opposed to wood, this effect is achieved by applying a scumble glaze over an oil based primer. And indeed is a very involved operation, If I were you I would seek advice as to the restoration of this superior wallcovering and please let me know how you get on.

We have lincrusta which is wallpaper with a wood grain and is probably treated as you say. Any ideas on how to find said specialist?

I would contact The manufacturer for more advice regarding this, if after getting their advice you still remain unsure please post back offering some detailed pics. I will then try and guide you through the restoration.
