Is it good practice for a decorator to line over plasterboards that have not been skimmed. Or are they capitalising on muy ignorance!!

Now I am noticing all the joins. I would prefer a plaster skim finish and feel like stripping it and getting the plasterer in.

all the plasterboard I've ever had done was skimmed afters, lovely to paint then

suspect you've been gypped

Strip it and have it plastered. That's what I would do.I know it's doing the job twice over, but at least it will be a much better finish, and there should be no need to put lining paper on to hide the bad plasterboard joints.

Roughcaster.

Get someone in to plaster skim it; some new builds decorate straight over taper edge/skimmed board joints but, personally, I can’t see the point. Why go to all the trouble of sticking lining paper onto new boards, when it’s just a little more effort to skim them; it’s a bodge that will always look like a pigs ear & god help whoever tries to strip it off at a later date! They are decorators after all & probably can’t plaster themselves but they should have explained & given you the opportunity to get it done yourself before painting out.

Thanks I will - eventually. I have nearly had my whole house redecorated over the last year and the lounge ceiling was papered over plasterboard. Three years ago we spent over £10,000 on a bathroom The decorator (different one) did the same thing. In my ignorance I thought nothing could be done about those joints and they were supposed to be there. I naively thought that a professional would advise about what would be best. When my husband gets over the shock I will get both these jobs attended to. Am I the only one who ends up paying twice for mistakes that could have been avoided if only a wee bit of advice had been given? Both these decorators I believe to be good at decorating but obviously do the job on a (do as is asked basis).
