How can you tell if my loft is suitable for conversion. Without getting a professional in. My loft only has 2 A-shaped trusses that hold up the roof.

two things to keep in mind your celling joist[attic floor]need to be about 8+2 inch
your finnished celling height shold be no less than 2m high with all boards in place

Joists are only 4x2 at present. Height is not a problem well over 6 ft even if we add another 4 inches. Its the trusses that concern me as there are only 2 within the whole roof. lenght of roof is approx 26ft.

seek professional advice.

We can only give opinions, a professional can come and look at the roof we can't (unless you are going to invite all of us on the forum :p )

Providing you have the relevant headroom i have yet to see a loft that can't be converted its just a matter of cost a couple of photos would be good.
The two 'A' frames you are on about are they just holding up the purlins and are there normal rafters in between.
You really need 2.5 metres from the bottom of your existing ceiling joists to the top of your ridge board to be sure, if you want a dormer.
