Hi all, looking for some assistance for any kind souls who can proffer some advice.
I have an issue with a loud groaning noise that can be heard on my roof when the wind blows in a certain direction. The roof is a pitched slate roof with a pvc gutter and down pipe and there is a small soffit vent wirh a velux window opening. The roof covers a small bedroom.
The noise is loud and distracting and annoying enough to make you want to leave the room.
Actions taken so far are
1. Window has been eliminated as source of the noise as the noise still occurs when window is open when I lean out over the roof the noise is still there.
2. I siliconed two flashings at top right and left of the velux on to slate as noticed they had a gap below them
Noise still persisted.
3. I siliconed the lower velux soaker flashing as noticed it had a small gap. Noise still persisted
4. I applied ct1 sealant to the fabric that hangs in to the gutter for the full length (about 4 metres), both topside and lower side. Noise still persisted.
5. I sent a friend out on a ladder to put a cloth on to the roof and any visible gaps while I listened upstairs for the noise. Noise still persisted.
The noise seems to be coming to the right hand side of my velux handle and on a closer inspection, there is a soffit vent that is line that vents to the ridge that conveniently comes close to where I listen in to the roof from inside the bedroom. Is it possible there's too much pressure as my location is atop a windy hill? Maybe a baffle is rattling?
My next task is to block off the soffit vent to see if it makes a difference.
Aside from what I've tried and the soffit vent, I can't think of anything else it could unless someone can offer advice?
I have a recording but can't figure out how to post it on here.
Appreciate any help.
