Fired into action by a similar query with a different heating set-up, should I bother with a Magnabooster-type cleaner for an 8-year-old oil-fired (Firebird) unvented system which is working superbly? Ie, is it more of a pre-requisite after a boiler change or with certain types of boilers?

I should add that money being no object, I'd have one in place tomorrow, as I believe it could only improve (or maintain consistency of) the system. Times are hard, though.

No.

They can help clean a system but are not a prerequisite in a good heating system.

Put it under a 'nice to have'.
