My Magnaclean filter 28mm is about six months old - I replaced it already once in January and I can see that it is leaking from the isolation valves again

Is this normal? It was bought brand new and I wonder now if I should get a brass filter

Previously I was told that these magn filters are the best at catching debris but it has leaked twice in six months

The filter is on 28mm copper pipework so I cannot think of how this could happen with different new units

Any tips on whether to replace with a brass one at a cost of £250

Where is the leak coming from? The valve spindles? Or the joints where the valves are attached to the body? Or to the pipes?

Do you really mean 29mm pipe?

Hi Its 28mm pipework

The leak is coming from the valve joints which attach to the casing - I had a gas engineer come out and he tried to tighten it but said its leaking

I don't quite remember - is there a rubber "O" ring in that joint?

yes, maybe it has got scale on it, or it was not greased when assembled. I still have a bit of a tube of Dow corning MS4 that always helps with leaking at o rings

I think silicone grease is more appropriate.

I found the threads on the glass-reinforced plastic tend to feel gritty.

Dow corning MS4 is a silicone grease, more usually used on vacuum gear, but perfectly fine for plumbing.

oh, sorry, I thought it was a sealant
