Making pannier bags for bicycle

I would like these heavy duty bags for my bike but they're expensive and I think I could make my own much more cheaply. I was just hoping to get some advice regarding what types of timber would be suitable and whether other types might be rendered suitable by a protective coating. Thanks for your help.

I think I would be considering a ready made rear bike rack, together with some synthetic throw over saddlebags - just for convenience and ease.
I don't think any timber at all is a good thing in this application!
Check out Halfords maybe for some ideas - everything should be as light weight as possible.

You might consider plastic box files, [from stationers]they arecheap, easily fitted and waterproof.
