I was only 5 in 1970 so its a bit before my time

I can certainly remember 4 star being 75p a gallon

I read Arthur Lowe's biography a while ago. He was stationed in the Egyptian desert during the war and he said that soldiers used to wash themselves in petrol, it being so cheap and plentiful, and water so scarce.
