MDF Preparation & Protection

Can anyone tell me the best way to prepare, seal & protect MDF, I'm making a desk out of it.

i am not a carpenter, but according to most make over programmes the only problem with mdf is when it is cut (fibres going everywhere, they just use normal paint when cut
