hello,
you need to measure the maximum width by the maximum length. But remember if you have abend on your stairs the maximum width will be across the bend as this will be greater than straight across the step.

Hope this helps.

What I done was measured the width of stairs and counted how many steps there was. (then measure the landings if you've got any), then went to the carpet shop and give them the sizes I had wrote down which they worked out the right size carpet I needed. :)

take a piece of yarn or ribbon and outline the step going up taping as not to move the yarn. after outlined mark ribbon start and end. undo tape and pull yarn out. there is the length. now measure width and length x width equals square footage. once you have square footage the rest is easy.

find out how carpet is made wither it be 12'w,15'w, 6'w, OR13.6'w. then take square footage divide by width of carpet and it tells you how much is needed. this way is less math and i found it works quite well.

so say you measured 3.5w x 20L
3.5*20=70sq ft
70/12ft wide carpet= a 5.8 linear feet of carpet or a 12*5.8 always at a foot for waste, it better to be safe.

measure one tread width, one riser height and multiply by the number of steps to get the length, then just measure the width..
add a few inches to the width, and an extra foot or 2 to the length..
