why? we have the ability to make synthetic oils for lubrication, and to grow crops for bio-fuel..

And that's the big debate, natural oil will run out at some stage, but there aren't enough land areas to grow crops for biofuel, as that means losing land to grow food, but that's a whole new hot potato debate. Oil isn't just used for transport, it's in everything, clothes, roads, plastics, paint, etc etc etc..
