metal in walls?

We have a loft conversion with a large dormer window type thing. I was trying to drill holes in the plaster to put curtains up and struck metal.

My wire/pipe detector indicates that the walls surrounding the window appear to have embedded metal all around.

Why is it there?
Can I drill through it safely or should I be looking for blinds ?

Could be the plasterers beading that you are coming into contact with. Some of the products consist of mesh at right angles, which may extend 3-4 inches with a solid bead down the centre.

Lintel would be unlikely in the roof section unless it's taking the weight of the roof and without seeing I can't say or you may have hit a joists hanger or as previous post. You can get information on your drawing plan from your Building Control Dept.
