apologies if this has been answered before - the problem I have is that the valve was stuck on one radiator and when pressed down a few times the radiator heated up, my problem is when I put the head back it cools down again - I noticed that in order to put the head back it had to be pushed down against the spring under pressure , does that mean the head is faulty and needs to be changed

Look at section on sticking TRVs in Sticky reference topic above. Try the head off another valve and see if you have same problem.
