Hi, so have had an engineer take out my broken boiler, he has bought a new boiler and now says it can not be connected to existing flue (9 years old from when the flat was converted). This means ripping out the ceiling and replacing it.

Is this a common problem that new boilers don't fit existing flues and is there a way round it?

Yes and yes.

It is a common problem, and yes there is a way around it - fit the new flue.

No there's no way round it, you must fit the flue specified and made by the manufacturer of the boiler being installed

apart from any blr manu voiding your warranty and issues over the gas safety regulations regarding the suitability of the flue. at 9 yrs old your old boiler was probably standard efficiency. Your new boiler should now be a condensing high efficiency model. In which case your existing flue will be fundamentaly different and cannot be used.

change the flue

just a quick one based on this, without meaning to hijack post. how would others classify this situation of they came across it? AR or I.D.

And what real engineer would turn up and expect a boiler to fit onto an existing 9 year old flue.

ID and riddor plus slap you for thinking you can fit a new boiler to a old flue :) what do you want your life or a cheap fix ? plus if it is condensating boiler the old flue would rot away due to the water vapour that comes out the flue:)

Yet again I cannot understand how this situation has arisen.

When a new boiler is required an installer will come and assess the requirements and give a quotation.

In this case it seems the installer is totally incompetent and has tricked the owner to part with more money than was originally quoted.

It sounds as if the installer is not qualifed or experienced and perhaps just a builder. He should be told to take his boiler away and you should find someone who knows what he is doing.
