Hi,

I have thought about a career change for sometime and i am looking into becoming skilled in a trade possibly as an electrician. I am a natural all things DIY and i am in the middle of refurbishing a house with a friend. Electrics are an area of interest that i have dabbled in but would never consider anything more adventurous due to rules and regulations.

Ok here's the catch, i am one female and two no spring chicken...well not so much anymore  So is this still something that would be worth doing and how long does it take to become qualified. Would like to hear from anyone who has an relevant info on this and also are there any female trades people on here???

Mandy :p

The NICEIC and the ECA are running a scheme at the moment called jobs for the girls aimed at getting more females into the Electrical industry.
I takes about 4 years to qualilfy fully in the Electrical trade to the required standard to be graded as an Electrician,
The first course is currently the City & Guild 2330 level 2 this is usually two days a week for a year at college some do offer a night class, then you need to do the 2330 level 3 but for this you will require practical hands on experience.
You will also fill out unit evidence for working towards an NVQ level 3 and then have to take the AM2 practical test.

There are training providers offering a domestic installer course but to be honest you cant learn the trade doing a five week wonder course.

Im currently training my partner who works alongside me she attends college full time currently for the level 2 2330.

There are some females in the closed CC. I used to have a female apprentice - but Im a plumber, so cannot offer advise on your chosen proffession.

I`m a lumberjack - I like to dress in women`s clothing and hang around in bars . Is that a trade , Lumberjacking

If qualifying over 4 years is a turn off, you could go solo as a handy-woman.

It is if you are a nutter...on the up side you never know you may look better as a woman

A reply that is totally relevant to my original post....if you are going to try and take the p*ss at least make it funny.

Well its a good idea to train in a trade !

The downside is that its bad for all trades in the current economic climate.

It must be a nightmare for someone going self employed now and trying to build up a customer base.

The best advice I can give is to try and find a trade that's not oversubscribed

So forget electrician, plumber, gas fitter....... try and specialize that's the key. Easier said than done I know.

The fact that your female ..............make that work in your favour !
By advertising the fact !

If you don't mind working at height then highway lighting is a good option there's a lot of work replacing lanterns at the moment as the local councils try to spend there budget before April.
It's still Electrical work just in a more specialist field

Pick the trade YOU want to do - don't be put off listening to tradesmen on here telling you their trade is oversubscribed. They're just afraid that your better communication skills will take customers from them.
