Hi all

I have just built a single story rear extension and i am planning to build a pitched roof approx 20 deg.

What system should i use to fix the rafters at the high (ridge) end.
do i use a wall plate screwed to the wall and then nail the rafter to the wall plate. Or are there special angled joist hangers that i can fix to the rear wall.

Look forward to a response

you can fix a timber batten to the wall known as a pole plate.

this is best fixed using rawl type bolts every 600mm or so.

to save the problem of having a bolt sticking out right where a rafter needs to be fixed, temporarily fix the plate with 4" screws.

the plate can either be fixed under the rafters or at the rafter to wall abutment.

the plate will have to be as deep or deeper than the splayed rafter end cut.

you then need to nail or screw the rafter to the plate.
