Thanks Alastair, please see my recent comments on the new post that may explain some (not all) of your points. the job was to reuse existing slates where possible but where it may be possible to reuse a slate, it might not be advisable eg. If both nail holes are shot. I am not an expert so its great that you guys can comment on whether he is refusing bad slates. Please look at the newer post and leave comments.
