its not fair to say that every installers is influenced by points. and freebies I install viessmann vitodens 200s (with weather compensation) because it is the controls force the boiler to provide a decent temperature, be efficient and reliable but them and my suppliers leave a lot to be desired in terms of service to installers...

I have no other interest other than getting the "best" to my customers..

if you are going to install a new boiler and unvented do your self a favour and use a cylinder sensor do enable you to probram the hot water temperature to the degree, and get proprietary controls that enable the heating to be compensated...indoor or outdoor.

Such an approach minimises fuel consumption, enhances reliability and give you a noticeably improved heating system..

i didn't say that installers were influenced by freebi's i just said it happens, i get points from Works when i fit a Remeha but that's not the reason i fit them, i fit them because i don't get any probs which in turn means neither do my customers so it's a win win situation. i have never fitted a Viessmann but i have heard good reports about them, i guess you are talking about the four pipe version ? however that needs to be fitted with the temp censor on the cylinder which you can only do on their own make of cylinder & as most of the other makes req a zone valve i don't believe you can fit another make of cylinder, the pressure will be limited to 3.5 bar anyway before it enters the cylinder & if you feed the cold water from the valve supplied to give balanced supplies then i would say 3 bar is enough as it will vary.

I too have done lost of avantas with the temp sensor and the boiler controlling a three port valve (diverter not mid position) great bits of kit...if you can get the right part number from baxi for the temp sensor...

you can wire the boiler through the cylinder over heat stat to get round the two port issue...

especially on a retrofit as there wont be many inspectors trying to force outdated rules on you!

yes i totally agree it is a mine field & you could ask 10 different RGI's & get 10 different recommendations on boilers, nearly every RGI will reg the boiler with the manufacturer & everyone will get something back from them wether it is points on a card, free gifts etc etc, i try to give the best advice to my customers & if something is rubbish or has a prob then i will tell them, i don't believe in spending more money than you need too when another product will do the same or better, if i thought Remeha were rubbish i would tell you it's no skin off of my nose what you fit i'm not doing the job, i just think you are being blinded by the installers that say yes it's the best you must fit this, why do you think WB are one of the only ones not to use a stainless steel heat exchanger ? then when their sales went down they offered a 10 year warrantee on that, because it looks good & if they have to change one or two then that's small fry in comparison with the amount they sell because people are thinking they are getting a good deal with a 10 yr warrantee.



That's confusing. You are implying WB are a lower quality than rehema and maintenance costs are higher. However WB offer at least 5 yrs warranty on their system boilers and Rehema only 2 years. Whatever the reason why WB offer this warranty it is there which means you are covered.

And I've never heard anybody say that the WB after sales support is poor so the warranty is not one of those useless ones, they will come out quickly and fix it.

If Rehema are so good why do they only offer a 2 year warranty?

be fair a wb junior could not and is not sold in the rest of europe and certainly in not in Germany because it cannot take an out door sensor which is mandatory there..

so it is a dumbed down boiler for the UK market...

the new exclusive does come with a 5 yr warranty although that is a combi, you can extend the system boiler to 5 yrs by paying for it, i didn't say WB were lower quality i said they were expensive & a pain to work on which they are, yes i agree you shouldn't have to worry about a breakdown on them for 5 yrs but after that the service & repairs are going to cost more, with WB you pay for the name & you always have but it doesn't make it better, like megaflow if you take out the internal expansion they are the same as lots of others but can be nearly twice the price why ? because you are paying for the name, in fact due to the internal baffle a 250 ltr cylinder isn't a 250 cylinder it's less due to the baffle, megaflow 25 yr warrantee ariston 25 yr warrantee, if something is better & offers more then it's worth paying for but in the OP's case neither of these is true

This is all interesting stuff. It's certainly fair to say that the worcester boiler and megaflow tank do seem to cost a significant premium. I don't feel tied to anything but then again the warranties surely provide a certain piece of mind?

How often does the Megaflow lose 'the bubble'? Is this a genuine concern or a rarity?

any unvented cylinder should be serviced yearly to check the safety controls & i normally refresh the bubble at that time

We are doing a 6500 footer this week had it needs less than 60.

Most engineers are recommending between 30 and 37kw. I posted the 40cdi as an example.

The original question still remains however, for a bog standard installation, what cost would be reasonable to install the hardware as described (assuming no extra work is required)?

I appreciate it's only a guestimate but that would be fine.

We do this work for around 5k usually. I would not fit a megaflow as they have no expansion vessel and tend to leak after around six months from the safety valve.Mrcentral heating do better ones on the net.I prefer valiant but thats down to personal choice.

Say the tank is 650,boiler 1100, pipe and fittings 250, that is around 2100 double that and add the vat seems fair.

To date the quotes we've had indicate labour for this kind of installation at around £1,800 (inc VAT). Given your estimate, that seems a resonable price.

Is it a 2-3 day job?
