Not sure what they are supposed to be doing - holding up the joists?
It was really the joists I was talking about - which look pretty 'substantial' (particularly the 'triple' one).

The BIG timber connects 8 (or 10) prefab oak mansard roof trusses together, which are made of the same size timber.
The joists you can see are just standard sized joists, nothing special about them, obviously other than the triples, which will form the support for 1 of 3 skylights.
