Newel Post Fitting and stringer (Pics)

Hi All,

I Need some advice on how to fit the bottom newel base, as there was not an existing post in place.

I want to cut the stringer ;level with the first riser, however I have cut a 3" piece out of the end of the stringer to check if it was bolted in and it seems to go in to the concrete floor.

Would it affect the structure of the staircase if I cut it level with the first riser to install the newel

or has anyone got any ideas where or how to attatch it? It is a straight stair case against the wall?
