I am replacing a sealed unit in a door. Size of sealed unit 180cmx 58cm The previous sealed unit had no packers and was held in by the plastic strips!. How many would be suggested along each side? Is it a case of making the sealed unit sit tight in the door frame and then fitting the plastic strips?

The packers are primarily there to centralise the D/G unit in the frame, but in the case of a unit as big as yours you'll also need them packed in strategic places to ensure the door doesn't drop under its own weight. Take a look at this link http://www.doubleglazing.com/diy_toeing_heeling.htm Which explains the basics of "toeing and heeling". You can buy small quantities of assorted thicknesses of packers on eBay.
