Hi,

We are going to be painting our stairs white gloss and then will be putting a carpet runner down the centre.

What are the steps for painting steps?

Sand the down
Clean
Primer
Gloss
Should it be sealed and if so what with.

Only going to paint the sides and leave a gap for access up/down stairs.

Thanks

If the treads have not been painted before you should first apply a primer,
You could either use a primer/undercoat or a specific wood primer followed by your undercoat and gloss.

Firstly you will need to sand the areas to be painted then dust off and hoover, then working from the top down apply your primer (if needed) allow to dry and lightly sand and dust off.

With regard to your undercoat and gloss just follow the procedure listed above, if you choose a primer/undercoat this can be applied for your second coat, then if your satisfied with the depth of the finish you will be ready to apply your topcoat.

rezarf,

You've got it spot on with the exception of stating just primer rather than primer/undercoat.

Just try and avoid using the area until dry because no matter how careful you are, your movements will cause airflow and with it will come the inevitable bits of dust that will stick to your paintwork.

I think you will find that stated either a specific wood primer or a primer/undercoat.
