I have a ceiling painted with vinyl silk that I now wish to paint with matt emulsion.

I have a tin of Dulux water-based primer and undercoat.

Could I just go over the existing silk emulsion with the Dulux stuff and then apply the matt emulsion or would I still need to sand the silk paint to provide a "key".

TIA

9 times out of 10, simply painting over vinyl silk with matt emulsion is fine. Issues can arise in areas of high humidity (eg bathrooms).

By all means, sand it to provide a key but you shouldn't need to. With regards to applying the second coat of matt, the first will take longer to dry because the water has to evaporate (rather than evaporating and soaking in as would be the case with matt over existing matt).

Knowing my luck, I'll be the 1 time out of 10 when it goes wrong.
Was just trying to avoid sanding.
It's been painted a fair few years. I'll give it a go and see what happens.
Cheers.
