Hello there, thank you for all the info it has been really helpful. My question is - i am thinking about laying a reclaimed floor in a kitchen dinning room, would it be ok near the kitchen area? would it be advisable to seal it against water damage and what products are available? thank you.

Parquet (wood blocks in pattern or mosaic tiles) can be installed in kitchens. As a finish you could use HardWaxOil, seals the floor against drips and spillages. Plus because you shuffle more than you walk in a kitchen a HardWaxOil finish is better. Lacquer or varnish will get worn more and earlier which will leave heavy traffic spots in the kitchen unprotected after a while and have to be re-sanded and resealed in the end, where a HardWaxOil finish properly maintained (with wax or waxpolish) will keep the wood protected.
