party wall?? foundation issue!!

i ilve in a semi . the rear of the houses is of course seperated by a fence. we are building an extension at the rear. my question is this...

what line should we take for our foundations. if we are having 450mm trench fill then does the foundation alll have to be on my side of the fence or can half of it be on there land. i suspect the former will apply which will obviously have an impact on the width of the extension.

there are some instances where b.c. will let you build right on the edge of your foundations (usually they like to see brickwork in the centre with 150mm projection each side) i think this involves beefing up the footings somewhat.
