Hi,

Just had an extension built with bi-fold doors opening out into the garden. The old patio now needs re-laying, which I'm going to try myself as we have no money left.

The current height of the ground outside is about 20cm step down. I know the guidelines are 15cm below damp proof course, but also that its possible to get the levels flush using some kind of drain in between. Not bothered about having it flush as I know that it can cause problems, but would like to minimise the step down.

As I'm doing it myself and have no experience I want to keep things fairly simple, but would it be possible to lay the patio at the current ground height, but then build a step on top which is flush with the inside?

Hope that makes sense!
Cheers

Yes go for it, a step is an acceptable breech of the 150mm dpc clearance rule.

Ideally put a vertical dpc between the step and the house wall.

yes, just a piece of dpm or dpc wedged between the wall and the step you build.
