What sort of master socket do you have? Is it an NTE5 like this?
bt_master_socket_2.jpg

If so if you loosen the bottom two screws the panel pulls forwards to reveal a phone socket. Try one or two proven working phone in here. (see if you can check the phones at someone elses house first).
If they still fail to work then you have a BT fault. If they work in the master socket then the problem is with your installation wiring somewhere.

thanks for the help,it is a NTE5 and ive had the front off and tried a known working phone but no joy, there is no exstenions,BT say there line is fine maybe they are just trying it on i mean £100 just to come out then the charges after that to sort it

The only thing you can do is call BT out to it, it may be just a faulty master socket but that is their equipment so only they should change it.
If it is their equipment at fault then they should not charge you for repairing it.

This certainly sounds like their issue.

Are you sure the phones you have tried work, and the ringer is turned on?

Expecting a thump......but......you are using the correct number when trying the phone?

There are instances when there can be a line or exchange fault which causes no ring on a line. These are all BT isses though.

bt often say the line is working, when in fact its dead, had this several times

Line test ok doesn't mean zip. There are a couple of checks you could try, but what do you mean by ive tried connecting another cable? It is important that no extraneous wiring is connected when faulting.

Dial 17070 (could be 917070 on some types of line). You should get an announcement telling you what number is connected to your line. If it isn't your number, then the line has been crossed somewhere and it's definately a BT Openreach problem. Try ringing it and see if your phone rings.

If it is your correct number, then try ringing from a mobile and pick up your phone to see if the call connects. This will prove that the line is connecting through to your address and and the ringing fault will be a BT Openreach problem. It is probably a faulty master socket, but be absolutely certain that the phone you are using does ring in a known good line and hasn't been accidentaly set to silent.

If you dont get a ringing tone on incomming calls one way to test if it is a BT problem would be to plug an ASDL filter in and plug phone into that as these have the ringer components in them.

Have you got a multimeter to measure the line voltage on the phone terminals? (dont do it if you dont know what to do)

We had a similar problem, no dialtone (for a couple of years at least!!!) - and our broadband was really, really slow (but worked). There was also very little voltage on the line, a couple of volts or so (instead of around 50v or whatever it is meant to be, certainly a lot more than 2)

BT turned up and it turned out the fault was on the telegraph pole, the outer covering on the junction box had fallen off and the weather had gotten in and our line ended up suffering due to the corrosion caused by the exposure to the weather.

thanks for all the help and advice, the phone is now working fine it WAS A BT FAULT
