...so I've just pulled out all my old rotting floorboards, treated everthing and layed my floor in brand new pine boards. Over the months due to other work the floor got very dirty and I hired an industrial sander and went against the grain...

I didnt realise this was the wrong thing to do until I applied Colron dye and it showed lots of lines and showed every imperfection! I think I'm going to purchase a belt sander to get and go with the grain and use a square block for the edges. My only concern now is though, do I dye the rest of the floor or rely on a belt sander to get me back to the bare wood.

I guess my real question is how deep does a standard dye like Colron go?

All advice gratefully appreciated.

That depends on so many factors: last grit used, softness of the wood, how much dye was applied etc.
So, unanswerable me thinks. Can you try it out in a corner?
