Hi all,

Our conservatory and adjacent wc is currently carpeted and gets a bit smelly as the washing machine (in wc) leaks.

So, we decided to get it tiled and when I pulled up the carpet this morning there were a couple of surprises!

The first is a drain hole next to the wall. This is used by the bathroom next door and has a metal cover half-way down. Would it be okay to tile over this or is there a better way of dealing with it?

The second is what looks like a manhole cover! Is there an accepted way of dealing with these or is tiling a no-go?

(you should be able to click on the images above to take a closer look)

TIA

In the first pic it seems you have a concrete floor but in the second, it appears to be chipboard - is this correct?

Ok then you can tile straight over what you've got. Assuming you don't need to get down that trap door, I'd be inclined to stick it shut before tiling. Have a look at the sticky near the top of the floor tiling forum for info on adhesives etc.
It might be an idea to stick a thin metal plate over the hole though or else if you drop something on that tile it'll crack.
Now would be a good time to bump off the missus and hide her under the floor. ;)

as gcol is misinformed here ...

NEVER EVER TILE OVER DRAIN ACCESS/MANHOLES ...lol..lol...lol

I can here the tut tuting from the plumbers around UK ..
when you tile a con floor if their is a manhole you Must by Building Regs fit an access point ,
you can get metal tile base surrounds , not that bad looking nowadays , an tile over it ...
later date when sh*tter gets blocked the lid comes up an is grouted back in afterwards .....

hope this helps :)

You mean when I flagged over the manhole cover in my yard I shouldn't have? Oh my.

yeah building regs an youl WILL NOT EVER SELL THAT HOUSE .....

hope you staying there ...junes coming .. lol ;)

*building reg bitches* traffic warden supererior like .. .... see more posts about this .. lol

Thanks Moz,

Having spent almost every weekend for 3 months rodding blocked drains last year (four manhole covers and numerous rodding points later I eventually found and removed a 3" block of wood with a nail poking out of it 25m down the drain) I had already decided against simply tiling over the hatch in the conservatory. However, I wasn't aware that it would be a building regs issue - how would they know as you wouldn't get them out to inspect a tiled floor would you?!?

I'm presuming it will be okay to tile over the small drain hole though. As you can see from the photo, not all of it is in the conservatory so it will still be able to vent and it's not a foul drain anyway (only does the bath and sink in the bathroom next door - which I'm planning to move upstairs anyway). Unless there's a little flap or something that you can get to fit over it that won't look too out of place?

What do you mean by June's coming?
