usually they're an insert dropped in from above wth a rubber washed, and screwed in by a collar on the underside. Hence remove the drain trap, and unscrew the collar, and you should be able to pop up the plug hole assembly.
Use a new rubber washer and check for leaks after reassembly. you don't want a bathful of water on the floor.

bobxx - there's no screw in the middle
slippyr4 - thanks, unfortunately the bath is sealed in so it would be a lot of work to get to the underside of the bath. I suppose I could try unscrewing from the top by using some sort of leverage on the holes, but the chances of the attachment underneath falling down and being irrecoverable would put me off.
