Can anyone tell me if 22 mm compression fittings are compatible with 3/4 inch pipe from the existing system installed around 1950?

No you need to get a smaller washer for the compression joint. Check out your local plumbing merchant.

Not really!

In an emergency they can be made to fit with a lot of PTFE tape.

Its better to use a special solder conversion coupler.

Its possible to get 3/4" olives to be used in a 22 mm compression fitting and they usually work ok. I would use them with care and silicone grease to lubricate the joint when tightening.

Totally with corgiman on this, never had a problem and dont see point in paying a quid for a 3/4 olive

Actually I thought corgiman was referring to a 3/4" copper olive.

FYI, the last batch I bought were 52p each.

Fair play - I prefer a closer fit meself. ;)
