Hi,

I'm currently renovating my daughter bedroom and would like some tips on the type and thickness of plywood I should use to create a solid sub base to lay new carpet on.

Currently the underlay and carpet is laid over floorboards which I can feel under my feet when I walk into her room and I can also feel some of the boards moving.

I'm in two minds on getting someone in to do it for me or have ago at it myself.

My carpet fitter has quoted me £370 including materials to ply over existing floorboard and fit a new carpet ( carpet and underlay supplied by me) and chippy has quoted me £200 excluding materials just to ply the floor.

Is it a straight forward job?

The only tools I have is a hand saw and jigsaw to cut ply with, would I need anything else?

The room size is about 10sqm.

Thanks

I've recently put down ply over floorboards - it's pretty straightforward, depending on how fiddly the room shape is.
It sounds like to first job is to see if you can level the boards, then screw them down.
The ply could be tacked or screwed down (I don't know about glue). If you decide to screw it down, then you'd need an electric screwdriver, (or an enormous amount of time and patience).
I personally wouldn't lay the underlay and carpet - it's one of those jobs which I think is worth getting someone in who knows how to do it, and has the right tools.

You could secure any loose boards and cover with hardboard for carpet .If it’s so bad as to need ply might as well replace floorboards .
