Politicians pay.

Ok, so how would you deal with, ooh, let's say property renovation specialists then? Only allowed to make so much per property, regardless of market worth of the property, any excess to be given to our grateful trough-feeders?

It's called taxation. Now you tell me how you can justify charging an ordinary factory worker £720 per day for your 'opinion'.

The question is not how much they are paid, but are they worth what they are paid, how do you quantify someones worth.

Considering that most of them are lawyers and can earn 3 times what they are paid I guess they are a bargain.

I don't have to. Whilst they were out on the ****, or vegging in front of the tv, I was spending my time studying and taking loads of exams. There is nothing to stop them taking steps to get out of the factory.

You belong to a cartel.

Now you're being stupid again, Joe. The IstructE does not set salaries, negotiate fees and there are no fee scales by which anyone is bound. The charges that SEs or SE companies charge are those that they think the market can bear and those at which they consider they are receiving suitable remuneration for their experience, qualifications and training.

"Engineer" is not a protected term like "Architect": anyone can call themselves an engineer, what they can't do is call themselves a Chartered and/or a Structural Engineer, without membership of the Engineering Council and IStructE respectively, which can only be obtained by meeting required standards.

Now, in what way do I belong to an illegal set-up?

Yet more totally uninformed Joe nonsense.

There is no requirement for a GP to be a member of the BMA to practice in the UK ... They need to be registered with the GMC though ;)

I'd reckon, given the excellent support the BMA provides, that a GP would be a fool not to be a member of the BMA but it's definitely NOT a cartel as Joe has stated.

Why not continue to take the **** and go for £1720 per day? After all, you are part of a cartel that issues certification required by councils etc. The punter has to pay so go for it. It's a cartel so why not?

Any body that groups together as a bloc to negotiate is a cartel.

You should know - you are married to a GP.

Why not continue to take the p**s and go for £1720 per day?
Would that I could. Out of my daily time charges comes software, PCs, stamps, paper, ink, electricity, gas, rent, insurance, courses, professional fees, equipment and maintenance/repair, car (and bike!) fuel, servicing, RFL, tax, NICs, British Standards, reference books, subcontractors, accountant, bank charges, phones, part time girlie. So, it's not what I, personally, earn.

Add into the mix the time that I can't charge for (over-run on fixed fees, general client queries, admin time, time doing CPD, attending courses, reading tech literature) and I bet the hourly rate, paid by me to me, is less than that of a tanker driver.

A guy that runs a post office uses all that and much more - but I doubt he earns £720 per week. Professional fees should be capped by law. No-one is worth 15 times what someone on the minimum wage is paid. You are part of a cartel - and you know it.

Truth hurts eh? Go get some sleep (if you can) then go and charge some poor sod £720 tomorrow. Stand around looking bored with a clipboard and a cup of tea while builders do the work and get paid peanuts because you are part of a cartel and they aren't. Disgraceful.

So, by that rationale ... Unions are cartels then Joe

Your understanding of a cartel ain't the same as mine ... Which isn't a surprise as we operate on entirely different wavelengths
