Rumours had begun to circulate online that Putin's illness is more serious than official sources have let on, with some pointing out that he has not been seen in public since 6 March, when he met Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi in Moscow.

"The Interpreter" has translated a report, purportedly published by Russian website Russkiy Monitor, which alleges that Putin had been treated for a stroke. The website of Russkiy Monitor is currently down.

Mr Putin has never been a member of the Village People.

Nor has he modelled for "Hunk" magazine.

He just likes wearing rubber outfits and showing off in public.
