ideas from you all on preparing exsisting paint work.l am painting my outside windows, blistered and flaked paint when scraped and rubbed is not smooth enough when rubbed down. lt looks worse when the undercoats on.Best methods to get a nice finish, theres still alot to do.l,ve tryed using a sander but that s not brilliant.

You mentioned undercoat.....have you primed the bare wood first?...you shoud do.

As for getting a decent finish, strip as much of the old paint of as possible, avoid using a blow torch as the windows may be rotton and will catch fire easily.

Apply primer to bare wood and then sand down....you can use more than one coat of undercoat...the more coats you use the smoother the finish will be...rub down between each coat.

Avoid using powder filler as much as possible, if moisture gets to it large lumps will break off...if you have to use it use pva in the water you mix it with...it helps to make it waterproof.

Finally.....use an exterior satin finish instead of gloss.....gloss highlights rough areas far more than satin or flat finishes.

Instead of using filler on rough edges try 'featheirng them off' with glass paper instead.
