Need to paint a wall which is partially painted, but showing patches of bare plaster where the previous paint has blistered or been pulled off with the wallpaper.

The rest of the paint is solid and shows no sign of pulling away, but I'm expecting it to start lifting if I slap on mistcoat and moisture gets underneath it (exactly what has happend on previous jobs like this!)

What's the best thing to do? Seal the bare plaster areas with something like Bullseye before getting out the filler to smooth it all off?

You might be better off with Zinsser Gardz- it should deal with any residual wallpaper paste.

Before using that, I would wash the wall with warm water with washing up liquid in it. If the paint is going to lift, it may well ripple/blister at that point.

BTW, you only need to mist coat the filled sections, that said, there is nothing wrong with mist coating the bare plaster before filling.

If new paint lifts old paint, it suggests that the old paint wasn't applied properly in the first place, in which Gardz et al will help.

Thanks for the advice, I'll give it a good wash!

Have you ever used Zinsser Peel Stop? Looks good on paper for this sort of thing, but I've not used it myself

No, I have never used it. Sorry.

Their product that I use on a semi-regular basis is BIN- the shellac based primer. I use it to deal with water based stains.
