Hi everyone,
I have a radiant RSF24 boiler which is 13 years old. When the heating is on the boiler pressure rises to 3.5 bar so I turn it off before the safty valve kicks in.I have spoken to a tech helpline who advise that the expansion vessel needs to be re-charged which should fix the problum.Basically I have to let water out until the pressure of the boiler is 0 and then pump air into the expansion vessel to about 1 bar then bring the water pressure back to 1.5 bar.If this works then all should be ok,if not then the vessel might need replacing.I would guess this is not as easy as he made it sound,is this something I could attempt myself or should I leave it to an `expert`whom I will have to call out.
Now I have no wish to upset any of you good guys out there but the last time I had a problum when the boiler would not stop heating I called out 3 people, the first 2 both said the boiler was knackered and would need replacing? The 3rd said no way its just a faulty thermocouple/thermostat and fixed it for 40 quid. All the guys where corgi reg or claimed to be so I`m a little bit wary now about calling someone out, can`t call on the guy who fixed in last time as it was 5 years ago and he has moved to austrailia!!!
Any help and advice is much appriciated
thanks:D

I am sorry you encountered some of the "get rich quick" brigade who just wanted to replace your boiler at £1500.

You were lucky to get someone to repair it so cheaply! We would have charged 2-3 times that price including the part whatever it was.

It certainly sounds as if the problem is the EV and the FAQ on this site tell you most of what you need to do. Its up to you to decide if you can deal with it yourself. If you can try it safely then you have nothing to lose by trying.

Be aware that your boiler is one of the "economy" makes but properly installed they are capable of good service. The fact that its still working after 13 years is testament to that !!! The "get rich quick" people say they are rubbish and will only last 3 years !!! They are so wrong!

Good luck

Tony

Look up a local gas spares stockist and se if they can recommend anyone.

Check out the corgi website for a list of Corgi installers.

Remember that not all corgi installers specialise in fixing boilers

hi thanks for the replies guys
I`ve just read the FAQ about expansion vessel and think I will leave it to someone more qualified than I. Just looking at the moment for the right guy in my area!!! Will let you know what happens. :D
