putting door in existing wall

have just moved into a bungalow and want to put a door through the hallway wall into the garage as there is no upstairs will this still be a supporting wall? ie could i take the bricks out upto the ceiling and then add a doorway with plasterboard above or do ineed to put a lintel in?
