When installing PVC conduit, does a female adaptor have to be installed when terminating into a BESA box?

No the entries are sized to grip the outside of a conduit, they are not threaded.

You should however use some solvent weld glue to ensure it does not come apart

No, you could use male adapters instead!

They come with a lock ring to secure the adaptor into the socket (or what ever)

Adapters are supplied with the fitting required inside, in the case of a female adapter this is a plastic bush, with a male adapter its a plastic locknut

Either is fine, but I prefer female adaptors as they take up less room in your socket box.

Either of the two but never mix them, otherwise you'll end up with dozens of little adapters running about the place.
