Pyracantha advice

Hi,
I have several pyracantha bushes in my garden and although they continue to grow well, they do not get a healthy show of berries as they should late season.

Is there anything that I can add to the soil that will promote the berries ?

Do you prune them at all,they flower on last years growth.

Yes, I prune them, is there an optimum time of year to do this or will I just not get flowering and berries if I do prune ?
